I am trying something slightly new this year with my Spanish 1 students for learning the alphabet. These are with my students who need most to move around in the classroom. You can divide these activities into different days. For me, these activities will take place during 2 different 85-minute blocks. (I do have to say that I got the idea of assigned each student with a letter from one of my colleagues, but I have expanded on this)
1. Practice the pronunciation of the Spanish alphabet.
2. Assign each student a letter of the Spanish alphabet. Some students may get more than one depending on how big your class is. Have the pronunciation of the letter written on the piece of paper. I usually walk around and ask them if they need some help with the pronunciation. Usually students know how to pronounce it, but they just need reassurance.
3. I show a word in Spanish on the SMARTBoard. The class then will spell the word. The student who has the first letter of the word stands up and says the letter. The student who has the second letter of the word stands up and says the letter and so on. I show them a total of 10-12 words. I make sure that every single letter of the alphabet is used.
4. The next class day, I divide the students into 2 groups. Each group receives all the letters of the Spanish alphabet. They divide the letters among members of the group. I show a word on the SMARTBoard. The people who have those letters should stand up and form that word. The group that forms the word first and can pronounce the spelling of the word wins a point.
